Felix Labisse. 1905-1982. French Surrealist painter, illustrator, and stage designer. His paintings depict fantastical hybrid creatures, and are often erotic. He was particularly influenced by the work of Belgian expressionist and surrealist James Ensor. In the 1930's he settled for a while in Paris and friended Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, André Masson and René Magritte. Although Labisse is not as well known as his circle of friends, he created a series of blue women in the 1960s, the first in 1964. These women, at once strangely sensual and cold, and with exaggerated hues, were immediately engaging and are perhaps those which are most associated with him.
He was the subject of a film by Alain Resnais, Visite à Félix Labisse (1947). In 1966 he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1973 he had a major retrospective in Rotterdam.
