Black & White lithograph study in lavis ('wash' technique) by Paul Delmondo (1898-1982), considered one of the best sculptors of his time, taken from Delmondo's  illustrations for Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Chonderlos De Laclos. 1975. 20 sanguines and 27 studies in black and white were created by Delmondo for the book which was one of very few books illustrated by Delmondo. Block signed. Image size 12.5x20cm. The original is housed in the Belmondo Museum, Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris.

  • Sculptor Paul Delmondo (1898-1982) was born in Algiers to a modest family of Italian origin. He began carving at the age of 13. He studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, which was interrupted by the First World War, and continued his studies in Paris becoming a laureate of the Blumenthal Foundation in 1926. He obtains the Grand Prix of Art in Algeria in 1932 and the Grand Prix of the City of Paris in 1936.  He was a Professor at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, and became a member of the Institut de France in 1960.
